I've been following your blog for some time and I am so happy you addressed this issue. I get very disheartened with so many dog owners out there, that despite their best intentions, they subject their dogs to this outdated and erroneous "alpha" theory. There is a lot of literature out there that can help us all better understand our dogs (not wolfs) and scientific studies that dispute the dominance hierarchy theory. My favourite by far is Alexandra Semyonova's "The 100 Silliest Things People Say About Dog". There are some book excerpts at www.nonlineardogs.com, enough to make me want to learn more about it. Hopefully it will give more dog owners food for thought.
Great blog, love it.

Thats probably true, however I have found that a lot of rural people know not to pet stranger dogs, in fact they know not to pet dogs while they are working, or eating, and many as kids, are told not to pet yhe dogs at all unless they are actually family pets. So I bet less dog bites happen in rural settings because people give dogs a lot more space to be dogs.

I always wonder if the difference between city and rural dogs is that rural dogs are more likely to be off lead more and not put into such humanized situations. They are more likely to be dogs doin dog stuff.

Yep its a slow process so I am glad my husband is around sometimes so we can walk them together. Then if one of their triggers is approaching we can simply seperate them by enough distance that niether reacts. Its progress:)
